First steps to do when you get your VPS

1) Connect via the serial console and set your ssh port to one that is assigned to you.  (NO LONGER REQUIRED CHECK YOUR VPS DETAILS EMAIL FROM YOUR HOS TO SEE WHICH PORT IS AUTO FORWARDED FOR YOU)
2) Install web server and place content etc on it
3) Check your e-mail "Your New VPS Server Details (READ IN FULL)" for the external IP
4) Point A record for your domain at the IP given to you in step 3
5) Open ticket asking for reverse proxy entry to be created for you (now fully automated no need to do this http://forum.lowendspirit.com/viewtopic.php?id=1152 )
6) Smile, you are all done smile

Re: First steps to do when you get your VPS

Also, based on popular reports... Please only use the serial console via SolusVM for step 1 smile

You can connect to the serial console anyway you want but I cant/wont help you if it does not work and you are not using SolusVM.

Re: First steps to do when you get your VPS

You can also download and install gogoCLIENT from here http://www.gogo6.com/profile/gogoCLIENT and register account here http://www.gogo6.com/freenet6/account.
There are 2 locations for now Montreal and Amsterdam, then just run gogoclient and enter username and pass, you will have ipv6 tunnel so you can use putty to connect to VPS and use it as you would with ipv4.

P.S. I have did this some time ago so i cant recall all steps, if I did I would make tutorial but I guess you can google for it, and sorry for bad English big_smile

The ip assigned (where you can see in solusvm/ifconfig) is a private IPv4 and 5 IPv6 (if not mistaken)
unless your is running on IPv6 you'll need to request Reverse Proxy to the node's ipv4

Re: First steps to do when you get your VPS

Anyone know if using these vps' and using reverse proxy for the IP address is suitable for SSL connections?
i just need one to host my WHCMS on, since i am downgrading my current server because it's not entirely needed.

Re: First steps to do when you get your VPS

It would work, but if it is a commercial/production installation why would you do that?

Re: First steps to do when you get your VPS

ok, thanks for your help. Reason been is i am currently on a mid sized Dedicated server, paying ~60Euro a month for a couple of html sites and one small php/sql and whcms install, it just seems like a waste of space and not very cost effective

Re: First steps to do when you get your VPS

I would go for a small xen/kvm vps for your whmcs installation if you don't want to place it on shared hosting.

Re: First steps to do when you get your VPS

Have a GOOD read of the email first.

However the serial console can be accessed via solusvm (links in that email), if you cant work out how to log in to solusvm knowledge-base guides are present for that.

So lets assume you at lease find the serial console button in solusvm, you connect, show credentials for username and password, and do the following:

nano /etc/ssh/sshd_conf
edit port 22 to one of the ports allocated to you (again details on ports are in the email and also in the knowledge-base)
service ssh restart
Connect over putty once you have the IP (many guides on finding the IP here, quick tip is to look at the IP in the serial console and then replace the last part with .139 for Italy, .24 for NL or .108 for UK)

Re: First steps to do when you get your VPS

@obakfahad: Have a look at CSa's script.
It will show you you the port range you can use - choose any port in that range and restart sshd, then you should be ready :-)

Go back to the "HowTo's, Guides and help" section and look for my post called "Give me IPv4 SSH!".

Re: First steps to do when you get your VPS

Hi Boran,

Maybe you removed basic settings information or you don't have ssh installed or you just need to put your settings inside that file. Basic settings are something like this:

Port 150xx (HERE PUT YOUR PORT FOR SSH)
#Port
ListenAddress 0.0.0.0
ListenAddress ::

HostKey /etc/ssh/ssh_host_rsa_key
HostKey /etc/ssh/ssh_host_dsa_key
Protocol 2

Subsystem sftp /usr/lib/openssh/sftp-server
ChallengeResponseAuthentication no
PermitRootLogin yes
UsePAM yes
UsePrivilegeSeparation yes

This are not best security settings but you can work around. To save your time you can use provided scripts on this forum.

Re: First steps to do when you get your VPS

When you made your order if you checked Debian 6, you will have Debian 6 preinstalled if not, login to your SolusVM panel and you can install OS of your choice. You need to learn how this system work wink
