WOW we reached 15,000 posts

That's pretty insane considering how this forum evolved to begin with smile

Thanks everyone.

I have updated the forum to make it more conducive to conversation, merged a lot of the sub sections that were essentially the same thing, deleted the unused bits.

A new forum/site is in development moderators and anyone 'really' interested will be invited to beta access it when the time is right.

Ant.

Re: WOW we reached 15,000 posts

I was kind of surprised when I counted them, never really paid much attention to the post numbers in the past.

Given how long the place has been going even with fairly low numbers of people I am amazed I have only had to ban around 3 people for behavior and 1 person left due to 'differences' but on good terms.

I've banned more accounts then I can remember for spamming.
Can't remember if I ever ban one because of their behavior.

Maybe, not sure what 'puvery' is though. smile

Thanks for the provider of the month votes for LES by the way too, always a surprise to see that these are considered in that on LET.

Really? Well in that case you can give each forum member a tiny vm for free for this special occasion wink! (Thats like what, 4 MB of RAM XD).

Re: WOW we reached 15,000 posts

Sure I can give you a 4MB VPS, its only going to take up the space of the config file, its not like it would actually boot or anything smile

What is actually the minimum RAM to boot a container now and run some small applications, 32 MB? Storage is probably going to be around 1GB.

Wait and how did you actually cram 15000 VPSs onto one machine then?

Re: WOW we reached 15,000 posts

hehe I am only joking, there is not 15,000 on a single server smile

The highest number is around 650.

I have span up a container with 8mb before, what you have to keep in mind though is that you cant use package managers with 8mb ram, so everything is compiled from source, VERY slowly.

I got wordpress running on 16mb before too.

This forum is running on 128mb ram for example, you just need to be smart about it.

And here I was thinking you had managed to get the equivalent of the Kowloon Walled City to run on a machine, with containers beating each other up for some burstable RAM and more CPU big_smile.

Sounds like 32MB is plenty then, and last I checked, VMslum.com is up for grabs. Throw in some really underpowered hardware like a cheap atom server... Hmmm... wink

Re: WOW we reached 15,000 posts

It would be interesting to do an experiment to see how many containers (in use) you could run on some higher end hardware.

Based on current figures I believe if I was to get a dual 10 core / 20 thread E5 (20 core/40thread total) 256GB Ram and pure SSD raid 10 storage with dual gbit bonded or teamed nics, if I really planned out the separation etc I could get somewhere around the 8000 x 128MB container mark with current LES performance levels, probably around 12,000 at 'acceptable' performance.

Sadly that experiment will never happen as I dont want to buy that sort of hardware for LES and finding 8000+ people to take part and play nice would be impossible.

maybe worth considering when OpenVZ 7 is more mainstream smile

If I knew how to get LXC running on my Raspberry Pi I would probably give away a couple of free containers here just to see what would happen smile.

Is the hardware you use all rented out or just old bits of equipment you had lying around? Or are you placing containers in a rented out VPS?

And how many LES boxes are actually running at the moment?

Re: WOW we reached 15,000 posts

The hardware is a mix although I have brought most locations on to my own infrastructure now nested within KVM with the exception of Japan/Italy which are leased from Vultr/IWstack.

I don't know about the other hosts but my count is little just under 2000 now.
