I have no clue why people think newer is better. It usually is not, and has major problems. I guess the media has a lot to do with ti, but come on stop being sheeples and grow the hell up.

I'm such a damn hipster that I use a manual lawnmower and get drunk for reals while considering consuming charred animal flesh upon the completion of my lawn's maintenance.   NO FUCKING JSON REQUIRED.

Re: The Wireless router @WSS bought

D610 is stable (if slow); D620 is now stable with a new drive- but I only had 2x1GB RAM to feed it, and I'm all out of being able to afford parts for donations (I hope that I didn't take a big bath on the UHaul- I gave away the copier and none of the color lasers are in working order- yet).   Anybody got 2x2G or 2x4G DDR2 SODIMMs they want to sell cheaply so I can make it into a usable machine?  I stuck my last (30GB) EIDE/PATA in the D610.

I also decided that grubby isn't getting the D505- I'm going to give that to my neighbors who I've had maybe 20 words with in the last few years- they're nice folks- don't have Internet, or a computer- but he is disabled and getting worse, and she's getting antsy since she (had to) quit smoking.. I don't want them to just sit around and drink all day.  I'm sure a nearer-neighbor will let them leech off their wifi, it'll give them some form of socializing, even if it takes 2 minutes from power on to a stable browser session.

Re: The Wireless router @WSS bought

I will have to look around man I might have some. If I do I will donate them to cause, as I am disabled as well. I know how hard it is with money, and things. I know for sure I don't have any IDE/PATA right now. I have to get ahold of my source and she if she has any ready yet.  Heck she might even have some ram as well I will get ahold of her and find out .

Re: The Wireless router @WSS bought

The laptops are all working- but that one is a bit low in RAM for being so close to being useful.  I have some Dual Core desktop systems (that came with the printers) which are missing SATA drives, and I'm fresh out- donated my 250GB to the cause, and gave my new never-used 1TB to keep my mechanic online.  I may just donate those to "New2u", who rebuild computers for poverty-and-disabled folks, but I want to ensure that the laptops to go to the disabled vets who are attending the local community college- I had spare batteries and chargers, since I've owned Dells for the last decade.

Re: The Wireless router @WSS bought

Forget the pride man they owe it to us for the shit we been through. I was in the Corps for 16 years and I have a lot of pride myself, but it is as my wife says, we did a job and risk it all, now it is time for the payment. I have my good days and my bad as well. I don't sleep for shit, I have nightmares still, and I can hardly walk some days, but we keep on going man. It is who we are and what we do at the end of the day.

I will make sure you get the ram to donate those tops, we take care of our own brother.

Re: The Wireless router @WSS bought

Thank you for your service.

Since CompGeeks went away in 2014ish (and is subsequently back, but awful), I lost my trustworthy refurb-or-used parts resource.  I don't like eBay or Amazon for these things- have any suggestions?  I'd prefer to donate them already setup and ready to go- might get me in the door to put some time in with New2U.

Re: The Wireless router @WSS bought

I wish I could find someone online that had a lot of them myself. I know a lady that does the auction circuit and clean out estates and what not and I get most of my stuff from her. I buy in bulk so I get a cheaper prices. I make sure they all work as well and make sure as to where they go, they have the software they need. It just makes sense to me to do it that way. I have Ebayed some stuff and it turned ok, others eh not so well lol. I don't Amazon anything at all. Do not care for their practices or prices.

You are welcome man, I did it because it was the right thing to do, not for accolades or fame/sympathy. I loved my job, and make no mistake it was a job, but it is time to be some one and something else I guess. Anyways I am on the ram and hard drive issue. WIll see what she has to say soon I hope.

Re: The Wireless router @WSS bought

My Nexus 5 is just like my fat ass.. I crammed it in my jeans and now there's a big fucking crack in it.  AAARRGH!  I won't be able to travel with a broken screen.  Dammity-damn-damn-damn.  I didn't even have keys or anything in my pocket- I just pulled it out, noticed a strange line-AWW FUCK!

RepairsUniverse has 12% off on replacement screens for the next few hours, coupon: DISPLAY12.  At least it's going to cost me less than $50 to fix it but I hate working on the Nexus 5.. it's so fidgety.  The Nexus 4, however, I could completely rebuild with one arm and both eyes tied behind my back.

Firmware was screwed and I had to completely blow out NVRAM and set a bogus board ID for it to give me the ethernet back.  It's taking forever to TFTP, but hopefully it'll be done in our lifetime.   It's going to be a custom DD-WRT, and I have no clue about an upgrade path for it; the latest firmware that I know is good is dated 11/2015.  It'd make a fine LERS (low end router/shell)+fileserver.. provided it ever finishes.   It has actual headers on the board, which was nice for a change.

Re: The Wireless router @WSS bought

I have a text into my source for the things we need. Should hear from her tomorrow most likely. If not I will hit her up again.

It's not that old for DD-WRT really, and sure is a hell of a lot better then a stock rom, no doubt about that one. Let me know how it is going and I would be interested. Can make use of it someplace in this conflagration of a mess I have here. I am hoping to grab a cheap 24-48 port switch at some point. Would make my life a whole lot easier.

Re: The Wireless router @WSS bought

Sadly, all of the Tomato firmwares available brick these, and there's probably never going to be LEDE/OpenWRT support for it.  The stock firmware has a nasty issue where the USB port driver opens a static high port when devices are attached.  PM me an address and I'll send it off to ya.  It's done flashing and seems to work well enough.

I used it to abuse my go-to-clunker 4G USB drive and throughput was pretty nice.   I don't think I'd expect to stream 4k from it, but it works fine as a little NAS.

I pissed in the pool a few too many times, and it was a pretty piss-poor excuse.  The technical reason was "ban evasion".  I got logged out and didn't know why.  I tried to login again, and couldn't.  I made a new account to see if it worked or not, and it worked.  Where I came from, ban evasion generally means someone at least uses a proxy to get around an IP block or something.   They can rot.

Re: The Wireless router @WSS bought

Besides we like it here it is nice and quiet and gives a chance to think sometimes. Fricken LET is a cesspool anymore with nothing but crap on a toast. It needs a thorough cleaning and some real backbone for leadership. It also needs a Morals check and go back to doing more with less, not who can oversell the most.

Re: The Wireless router @WSS bought

NetGear is preflashed with DD-WRT stock- either no password, or admin/password.  It should hit the mail Monday, since I didn't have an address.

What I'd do (if only used as a NAS) is statically assign the LAN port to the local LAN, and turn off DNS/DHCP/etc so it just acts like a host.  Samba is disabled by default so you'll have to turn it on.
