Disk I/O performance (DE)

Yo,

I came across Mikho's crazy NAT bundle(major props to you) and decided to give it a try. After a bit of playing around with the DE NAT I noticed the server’s disk performance was not quite up to standard compared to the BG NAT.

Germany (172.16.0.X)

[email protected]:~# dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=16k conv=fdatasync
16384+0 records in
16384+0 records out
1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 169.319 s, 6.3 MB/s

Bulgaria (172.16.20.X)

[email protected]:~# dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=16k conv=fdatasync
16384+0 records in
16384+0 records out
1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 4.4357 s, 242 MB/s

Yea, I know I'm a dick for doing the test after BF on a VPS that barely covers the cheapest coffee you can find in town. Anyway, should I get used to the DE speed or is there something wrong?

Re: Disk I/O performance (DE)

Have you checked to ensure that the I/O is virtio, rather than IDE?

Also, yeah, 6.3 is a little slow, but anything ~20MB/s is considered "Normal" on non-LES (not so cheap)

Re: Disk I/O performance (DE)

DE is the most popular location of mine and the sale on Black Friday added many more users.
My guess is that many of those newcomers did exactly the same as you did, ran a dd test and when that wasn’t responding as the other locations, they ran it again.

When 10 people run at the same time it gets slow as a turtle on sleeping pills.
However, I am keeping an eye on it, I have already a couple of abusers.
If the situation doesn’t improve during next week I will do some changes that will probably help disk i/o as well.

In my book anything below 100 needs to be looked at.
To my defence, DE somd out and I should perhaps have pulled the plug a bit earlier for the DE location
