Your opinion on lowendguide.com

Hello fellow members of the forum.

I recently updated the theme on my tutorial/guide website to hopefully make it easier to browse it and find interesting articles to read about.

I would like your opinion on the current state. If you visited in the past and remember the old look, feel free to say if you like this better or the old one was better.

I hope that if you reply with "good" or "suck" I would also like you to tell what is "good" or "suck".

Thank you for reading and hope I will get many comments.
I do still work on theme changes and some were applied as late as yesterday. More changes will be done but feedback is always appreciated.

If you find something you like and want to repost it, read this:
All the text on this website is free as in freedom unless stated otherwise. This means you can use it in any way you want, you can copy it, change it the way you like and republish it, as long as you release the (modified) content under the same license to give others the same freedoms you’ve got.

Site is in the title but here is a click able link: http://www.lowendguide.com

Visiting sometimes. Helpful guides. You may use transparent background on your favicon.

Re: Your opinion on lowendguide.com

i think the content is good, but you should just use a better wp theme, cause this one takes too many clicks to get to the stuff and feels a bit disorganized (not sure if its a blog or a wiki or what...), i would suggest maybe something free like http://wordpress.org/themes/wp-knowledge-base here is the url to check it out > http://ipanelthemes.com/kb/wp-knowledge-base-theme/ smile

besides that i would say add a form to send posts to the site huhummmmm

Re: Your opinion on lowendguide.com

Thank you for your comment, it is no secret that I'm not entirely happy with the theme and I'm always trying to improve it.
I'm satisfied with the colors and fonts but the layout is always a work in progress.

One thing that I'm looking into is the category listing on the left.

I'm not sure what you ment about this part?

Are you requesting a contact form where requests can be done?

Hi Mikho!

I find your website very interesting.

Perhaps the theme is not the best, but if you change it to another one, I would take away the categories from the left side lateral panel and leave them at the  bottom of the page. Alternatively make them come up un-expanded when you click on the categories: as you have quite a few guides, you can't see all the categories at once.

I would like to see more content, but I suppose that takes time: I'll just have to wait.

Thank you for your work.

Thank you for your feedback!
Any specific topics you are interested in/want to read more about?

The theme is always something that is on my mind. I posted above that I'm not really happy about it as it is right now, I have a few ideas that I will try to implement in a near future. will do some small changes from time to time.
What i'm currently looking into is to use the full width instead of the static width as it is right now.  Since no one is using 15" monitors anymore I'm pretty confident that I could make the site wider smile

I'm an inexperienced user, a n00b, so I basic skills, like using iptables and things like that.

I would emphasize on low end vps running under openvz virtualization. There are many guides in the internet, but when you finally decide on using one, sometimes there is something you can't follow as you can't use it in a openvz vps, and you have to find a way, in other tutorials, to be able to use it (like iptables-persistent, to continue with the example).

On another level, I would like to find out how to "do" certain things with your vps, like use it to run a program to extract information from a website and provide it on a webpage.

I'll put an example: the Spanish national Film Institute screens a film or two every day. The monthly programme is very nice indeed, but provided only in pdf or .doc (http://www.mcu.es/cine/MC/FE/CineDore/Programacion.html).
I would like to know how to extract the information from the .doc, process it, and show it on a web site so you can see what films you can go to see today or tomorrow in a glance.

You are completely right. There is acres of space on both sides available.

Again, thank you very much. I am aware your website must be quite time consuming.

Re: Your opinion on lowendguide.com

There is "pdftotext" for linux @Alex_mad.

sudo apt-get install pdftotext
crontab -e
@daily wget -O daily_progs.pdf http://www.mcu.es/cine/docs/MC/FE/PrograDore/PrograDore123.pdf; pdftotext daily_progs.pdf

That would give you the text file 'daily_progs.txt' everyday. You could just serve that file or grab the specific info (using 'grep' & 'sed' etc) and add to an html template.

Knowledge of Spanish is required to grab specific parts, lol.

If you mean that you just want the PDF to be viewed in the browser rather than downloaded (requires javascript to be enabled and takes a few seconds to load because the PDF file is 3.4MB, lol):

<html>
<body>
<object width="640" height="480" type="application/pdf" data="http://www.mcu.es/cine/docs/MC/FE/PrograDore/PrograDore123.pdf">
	<p>Insert your error message here, if the PDF cannot be displayed.</p>
	<p><a href="http://www.mcu.es/cine/docs/MC/FE/PrograDore/PrograDore123.pdf">http://www.mcu.es/cine/docs/MC/FE/PrograDore/PrograDore123.pdf</a></p>
</object>
</body>
</html>

@0x004a

I'll give a good look to that.

It never ceases to amaze me how always someone knows *and* takes the time to explain something in the internet!

Thanks

Re: Your opinion on lowendguide.com

Wow, that's awesome, and very fancy looking.  It would be nice to get all the article summaries on one page.
