OpenVPN on VPS

Hi everyone,
I just signed up for this great project. I want to initially see OpenVPN on VPS plan, I have got 192Mb ram for that. I am trying to SSH but not able to do so on 10.10.10.164. I am quite new to VPS, don't know much about it but trying to learn. I want anyone who can help guide me setup OpenVPN (any lightweight one).

Thank you.
Ahmed.

Re: OpenVPN on VPS

Hi,

as you read when you signed up: you do not have a custom public IPv4 address.
Only a private one and a few NAT' ports on a shared IPv4 address.
Alternatively you can use one of your IPv6 addresses.
See the FAQ: http://lowendspirit.com/help.html

So what does that mean for you:

Method A:
#1 Find out which TCP ports are forwarded to your IP (see welcome/setup email)
#2 Login via SolusVM
#3 Open a Serial Console there
#4 Configure sshd to listen to one of your forwarded (NAT) ports (see #1)
#5 Connect via ssh to the public IP (you may need to open a ticket to get the public IP) and the port from #1

Method B:
#1 Make sure you have an internet connection which supports IPv6
#2 Connect to one of your IPv6 addresses at port 22

Make sure you read about NAT/DNAT on the interweb so you get familiar with how it works in theory.
Everything else is easy as pie.

Re: OpenVPN on VPS

Thank you Dark for your help.
I actually tried to open Serial Console but it didn't log me in, it has a default ID, which I tried to use with password but no help, also tried to use my CP ID/Passwrod but still no luck. Help link isn't working for me sadly.

Re: OpenVPN on VPS

It happened to me too, pass for serial console from solus was not working 1 time, and then the other time when i reinstalled server console worked but only for 1 sesion, after that pass was wrong don't know why this happens.

If you can give me your IPv6 address for that server i will make relay over IPv4 for you, so you can connect with putty and set ssh port to 1 of predefined ports.

Then you should do everything that @dark told you, except #5 you could find that address running nslookup.

I'm not sure Anthony would like publicly displayed addresses so you can post here and any info regarding IP's we can exchange over email.

Regards!

Re: OpenVPN on VPS

Actually so far I haven't been able to access SSH through "serial console" , it shows a user name and password which I have tried but no luck, also I tried "root" and password that i have set during sign up, no luck. Also not sure if <snipped> is the right IP if I try yo connect through putty.

Re: OpenVPN on VPS

@5n1p
Thank you for the help. I used that IP in putty, with "root" and password set on sign up, also tried username and password showing in serial console, also used username in my "client"details, then also changed the password and used new password...no luck sad

Re: OpenVPN on VPS

HM: now first change root pass, since i have it, and dont send your pass to anyone you dont know and trust, that means noone should have you root pass.

And that link in last post i cant find, but now you can find some openvpn tutorial and install your server. Only remember to use only 20 predefined ports i have taken port 02 for your ssh, now you have 01 to 20 more.

EDIT: I was having other idea for all this setup, but this worked so ok, maybe this days if i have time, will try to make some web panel to do this your self and it will be installed on my UK LES big_smile. Will see maybe its not as easy as i think.

Re: OpenVPN on VPS

Thank you so much. I managed to install, import client keys but now this OpenVPN client is a problem, giving error "Error creating HKLM\SOFTWARE\OpenVPN-GUI key"

But with keys I won't be able to use VPN on my android phone , right? Can it be just by using a user name and password ?

Re: OpenVPN on VPS

Have you actually thought about using google to find a solution for that issue? wink
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=%22Error+creating+ … GUI+key%22

And according to the description of The OpenVPN Connect app "OpenVPN profiles may reference a cert/key pair in the Android keychain".
Though I haven't tried that yet.

Re: OpenVPN on VPS

Please don't post node IP's on the public forum guys.

Few tips:

Only use the serial console via solusvm, it generates a 1 hour session with a temp password, if you try to use it any other way you will get auth errors.

Someone scripted an OpenVPN installer that works with this somewhere on the forums, worth a look.

Re: OpenVPN on VPS

@Dark,
I tried that already, but no solution worked so far.
@Boss
Is that OpenVPN installer from "Nyr" in this forum?

Make sure that you click the button "connection info" when starting the console.
You cant use your vps username and password.
