Unable to login via SSH

I cant login using SSH on Putty as username root, and the password I set up during set up it says access denied. I have rebooted and reinstalled even copied and pasted, its a simple password but no luck.

I am using UK ipv4 NAT x.x.x.x:10.10.100.xxx and used the last octet of my external IP with port 21 which seems to be working fine as I suspect I wouldn't get a login prompt otherwise.

Have I missed something, am I using the correct username when I use root?

EDIT: removed external Ip.

Re: Unable to login via SSH

There is no need to include your internal IP in the ssh command.

In putty you set the external ip and change the port to your assigned ssh port.
Then hit connect.

Re: Unable to login via SSH

Yes it’s the same “access denied” message if I use just the external IP. I have done many combinations and variations, because i feel silly  saying I cant even log in lol

Re: Unable to login via SSH

Even if I  “adduser” in the hosting control panel’s built in HTML console, reboot and SSH back in with Putty, even the new user password is denied?

Re: Unable to login via SSH

I tried both the 32 bit OS's Centos and Debian. Both same result, weird hu!

Re: Unable to login via SSH

Did you read the instructions in the sign up email?
Did you check while in the html control panel if ssh was running?
If it was, did you check while in the html control panel if what port it was listening on?
If it was, did you check while in the html control panel if it allows password logon?
If it's a NAT setup, see the first line above.

Re: Unable to login via SSH

1. Yes I am fairly sure that I understood the instructions from the email (I doubt I would get a login prompt if I hadn't?)
2. Yes using the HTML console I ran “ps aux | grep sshd” and found the SSH service was running
3. yes I did also notice by using  “netstat -plant | grep :22” that it is listening to port 22
4. I looked at the “/etc/ssh/sshd_config “ file and noticed it did have “PermitRootLogin yes”
5. yes its a NAT

Re: Unable to login via SSH

Hint: read the instructions again, specifically the port number

Re: Unable to login via SSH

You should not connect to port 22 with putty. Your external SSH port is is the last octect of your internal ip plus '21'

If your internal ip ends with 131, your external ssh port is 13121.
If your internal ip ends with 91, your external ssh port is 9121.

Re: Unable to login via SSH

Um, I read the email… and just to clarify. My outward facing IP issued by my ISP ends in 84, so I use 8421 as a port number, that's what I am doing and that's what I have been doing all along.

Are you saying I should change the config file to include the custom port number “8421” ? Because the way I understand it, port 22 in the terminal config file is because the “8421” port number I use is automatically forwarded to port 22! or am I wrong?

I haven't been using port 22 in Putty!

Re: Unable to login via SSH

forget literally everything up to this point, forget your outward facing IP from your ISP, that has NOTHING to do with this.

Check your email again, look for the LOCAL or INTERNAL IP, e.g. 192.168.0.214 or 172.16.10.89 or something along those lines.

The last octet of 192.168.0.214 is 214 so your shh port is 21422

Then you need the external IP of the host node, also in the email, and connect on node.external.ip.address 21422

There is literally no clearer way to explain it.

When I wrote internal and external IP, I was talking about the IPs in the email you got at signup.

Re: Unable to login via SSH

Got it, its working. Thank you for your perseverance with me.

You were right and I was wrong.

What I was doing wrong was using my own internet service provider’s IP as the basis for the port number because the Email said “to access your server right away simply ssh to your external IP with the pre forwarded port as above” and I literally read “your external IP” to mean my own outward facing ISP IP.

So to sum it all up in my own words just in case someone else gets stuck.

The LES NAT gives you two IP addresses, one IP is their main LES IP
and the other IP is your new VPS server’s IP. To log on to your server using SSH simply use LES’s main IP address in Putty. Then for the port number you don't use the default 22 you have to take the last set of numbers from your VPS’s IP and follow it with the number 21 so you end up with (xxx21) or (xx21) like it says in the email.
