What about idea of cheap WordPress only hosting?

Good idea! That could be arranged on the free account or perhaps everything will be setup for the user and only the login information will be sent out.

Like it !

For a Wordpress only site, that would be all you need? Or am I wrong?

What if guy wants to install plugin with FTP? Or create subdomain? Or alter DB(forgotten admin pass)?

This and open a support ticket.

I spent a few hours yesterday to get already available hooks into WHMCS to work with auto install (on a test system). I gave up, only because I found out after reading the support forums that the existing plugins/addons/hooks either was no longer supported by the developer or that you actually needed root access to the cPanel server. sad

I will decide on the steps needed to make this work in theory and then it will be time to get things setup. (Website isn't finished yet). Everything seems so easy when you talk bout it but with no real experience on webdesign it is time consuming to do it.

Re: Free (almost) Hosting

How feasible would it be to take on the 'optimized' WP hosts of the world (such as WPEngine) as a nearly-free service?

The typical stack is something like nginx + php-fpm + apc + mysql + varnish (I'm guessing, from reading a few posts). And they have a large plugin blacklist of stuff that just eats cpu/memory.

I'd happily pay $5-$12/yr for something like that, per site. And I know many others would as well for 'optimized' WP hosting. Most of the optimized hosts start at $25-$30/mo, although there is much more support.

Additional funds can also be earned by promoting premium themes/plugins/services that have affiliate programs (this is the affiliate marketing side of my brain going). Once someone joins you could promote WooThemes/Themeforest and maybe some CDN services like MaxCDN, who pay quite decently. Not hard to turn a $5/yr customer into $25-50/yr, allowing more hardware upgrades/expansion.

Just a thought.

I think it's possible, the thing that costs the most is the salary for all support personal.
If you can make it easy for the end user to use and automate most of the other things then there is a good chance you can pull it off

Re: Free (almost) Hosting

Quick update on the progress.

Servers that will run everything is delivered. It will be a global network with only Inceptionhosting servers.
Main site will be in NL ( for now ).
WHMCS will be in the UK.
cPanel server will be in Miami, US.

Website is still being updated, cPanel installation was started not so long ago, WHMCS license delivered, will be installed when cPanel is done (hopefully later tonight).

Package creation and configuration will be done as soon as possible, will try to get it running before I leave for a short break over the weekend.
If everything works according to plan ( which never happens ) the first plans will be ready for deployment sometime next week.

This project has nothing to do with the shared hosting that inceptionhosting offers.

Re: Free (almost) Hosting

There will be a free alternative and there will be a €3/year alternative.
At this moment the plan is to have two more packages available.

And "application hosting", you will only get the login info for, lets say Wordpress. Nothing more.

Re: Free (almost) Hosting

almost free

I'm considering moving my sites off another shared hosting to Inception, but IDK, should I wait for this to launch or just buy from InceptionHosting?

Re: Free (almost) Hosting

Depends on the resources you need, if you don't need alot of disk the I welcome you to try this little project (Sorry Ant for "stealing" an Inception sale smile )

The plans are that it will be available sometime next week. The following weeks more "features" and plans will be made available.

What you should ask yourself is if you need all those resources and how happy you are with the current location and support.

First location for this project will be Miami, Florida.
