Centos on UK 3GB Servers?

Is there a reason why an ultra minimal install of Centos can't be installed? I notice you can't select it?

I have a VPS in the states running Centos WITH cPanel DNSonly. Now the actual server has 512mb of ram and 5GB hdd, butt look at what it is actually using:

This is using their own panel rather than solus...

I think the problem is with yum. When running yum update your vps will run out of memory.
Monitor the ram usage on your other vps and run a yum update.

Re: Centos on UK 3GB Servers?

Sadly there is nothing to update as cPanel has kept it nice and up-to-date...

Has it been tried though? I've got a proxmox server so I'll create one with exactly the same spec as the UK servers on offer here and see if Centos then DNSonly will install then update this topic...

Please do, I'm only speaking in general terms when it comes to yum update. It has happened more then once that centos freaks out when running out of memory.

OK, VM created with 128MB, 3GB, Centos 6 Minimal (openVZ) no swap...
Starts without an issue. Yum update required 112 updates and all that worked fine...

DNS only is now installing. I will update if it works or not!

Re: Centos on UK 3GB Servers?

Well that's fine on an idle server, with 128mb you might just get away with it, however 128mb with no burst or vswap may be an issue if you actually use the server for anything.

64mb absolutely does not work and at the time of inception this service was 64mb only hence the lack of centos.

I already have the centos templates I could enable them after some updates and tweaking but I will be completely uninterested in any oom issues due to yum, I actually spent some time getting a cent+apt distro ready but gave up on it assuming people would simply expect yum anyway.

As always if you want centos open a feature request topic on the forum if enough people want it and we can have a discussion around expectations I am happy to do the work to make it available.

OK, so it does work fine: https://82.145.45.157:2087

As you can see the memory was maxed out while the install was going on, but it works great...

I know it wouldn't work on 64MB, and people have to keep expectations in check... But at least I've proved it does and can work. Updates might have to be turned off unless you purchase more Disk Space due to cPanel downloading a large file then updating which clearly there isn't space for...

Re: Centos on UK 3GB Servers?

woah, wait, I missed that, You installed cPanel on 128mb? haha nice once, I assume it is DNS only which in the case would not work due to port availability however I think you have made a good case.

I will have another look at the centos templates over this comming week.

Ant.
