How do you document your installations?

By the end of this thread http://forum.lowendspirit.com/viewtopic.php?id=495 it was said that thatt he project would be well documented.
What do you guys use to document installations, saving config files, account information etc....

Are you saving everything in Excel, wiki that only you can read or on paper hidden in the basement?

Give me your best shot, amaze me with your bright ideas.

Re: How do you document your installations?

It depends.

For my own documents/notes I use Markdown which can be then converted to PDF/HTML.

For bigger things, I had been more or less forced to use Microsoft Word in the past. Not really happy about that.

Re: How do you document your installations?

I only use mail for quick stuff like email a picture of a serial number that should be added to the documentation.

At work we use a wiki (confluence) and that is nice, will probably set some other wiki up where I can write stuff that i need to save for one reason or another.

Re: How do you document your installations?

I mostly keep it all in my head smile

Seriously, I've put some of it in various text documents in the past but I haven't bothered to keep it up to date. Given that pretty much everything is just a google away why would you bother to document anything in this day and age? You found it before, you'll find it again smile Do it once or twice and you won't have to google it anymore. It'll just stick.
