Register a free domain with Freenom.com. Good ?

I would like to register an .cf domain to use with Cloudflare, but I am unsure if they are reliable enough to bother with even after reading this : https://www.quora.com/Is-Freenom-a-fraudulent-company

Currently Freenom doesn't seem to be accepting registrations.

Why not go and grab a $1 domain from somewhere?

That's a great website @RyanB, thanks !

Good idea, but I don't think it's worth buying domains for personal use anymore, even a $1 domain would need to be renewed usually at full price, and  prefer whois privacy which creates less choice. I would prefer a full domain like .cf to use cloudflare, otherwise just a subdomain from afraid.org or no-ip etc.

Freenom isn't worth the time as they can revoke your domain anytime they want.

Use freenom If you want a test domain and you are not bothered that after a year it will expire and you have to pay for it.
Mine expired recently after a year and it started redirecting to some infected websites.

Re: Register a free domain with Freenom.com. Good ?

I've used Freenom for several years now. It works very well, though I did get a warning from them recently because they were not able to use IPv6 on their end to verify that I had a web site. They do require IPv4 accessibility. From what I can tell almost all the people who complain about loosing their domain did not fulfil the clearly stated requirement that you must have a publicly visible web site. I don't really understand why people expect to keep the domain without following the TOS, but apart from that strange situation I'm not sure what proportion of the few other complaints are really true.

Freenom is a shady company though. They recently got suspended by ICANN and refused to comply. They also make big money off extremely poor countries. I don't like that stuff, but I'm just sticking to the facts here. Like I said, I did have one experience regarding IPv6. You can read about that here. I find their service useful just to get domain names for testing and playing around, but most certainly wouldn't put my trust in them. They don't seem to have fixed prices and have unspecified ideas about how much a domain name will cost if it turns out to be particularly valuable. Too bad. I've got a couple there which I would pay for if the company was reputable and had a stable management policy.

One advantage is that if you don't pay, you don't own the name and thus have whois protection for free.

Definitely not good to have an expired domain redirecting to something possibly malicious.... And suspended by ICANN !!
