[mrvm] - Singapore is live!

Just a quick heads up that LES is now back in Singapore.

Thanks to our friend Oliver of Ransom IT who supplied the server and made it possible.

The singapore location is based on OpenVZ 7 instead of legacy OPenVZ. That means there will be a newer kernel, unfortunatly it also means that not all legacy options are available in the control panel.

Re: [mrvm] - Singapore is live!

There are no bundle or promo available now.
There probably be something around Black Friday.

Well, there is one ongoing promo, get 3 NAT services, you can chose freely between 128/256mb and locations.
Add 3 to the cart and price drops.

Re: [mrvm] - Singapore is live!

Okay, maybe I'll wait until Black Friday to get the best price. Because I've made purchases on the 7 server locations that you have, and maybe only 2 server locations (SG and AU-Perth) that I don't have. So I only need 2 servers for now. Hopefully it won't run out until Black Friday later.. big_smile

The best price is now smile
You never know what will happen in the future. I might do an apple thingy and raise the prices.
Calling it ”exclusive”

Hhmm,, I see. But can I get a different external IPv4 when I buy a VPS at the same location? It might be like buying 2 SG-NAT servers and getting 2 different external IPv4.

Re: [mrvm] - Singapore is live!

Great service, getting 150ms to UK from this VPS.

However, a few services (google, netflix) are seeing the IP for this machine in Australia, so they're routing services from there. For example with google -

traceroute to google.com (216.58.200.110), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets
1  * * *
2  xe-4-0-0.cr1.sg3.sg.coloau.net.au (103.97.54.10)  0.362 ms  0.246 ms  0.287 ms
3  15169.sgw.equinix.com (27.111.228.30)  0.426 ms  0.337 ms  0.345 ms
4  108.170.240.241 (108.170.240.241)  1.195 ms 108.170.254.226 (108.170.254.226)  0.938 ms 108.170.240.242 (108.170.240.242)  1.134 ms
5  216.239.35.154 (216.239.35.154)  1.213 ms 216.239.35.174 (216.239.35.174)  0.882 ms  0.848 ms
6  209.85.243.142 (209.85.243.142)  74.804 ms 209.85.255.131 (209.85.255.131)  72.585 ms 209.85.243.142 (209.85.243.142)  70.346 ms
7  216.239.35.227 (216.239.35.227)  132.023 ms 216.239.35.143 (216.239.35.143)  129.641 ms 216.239.35.227 (216.239.35.227)  131.815 ms
8  108.170.247.65 (108.170.247.65)  131.638 ms  131.755 ms  126.755 ms
9  209.85.250.139 (209.85.250.139)  129.611 ms  129.909 ms  126.774 ms
10  syd09s14-in-f14.1e100.net (216.58.200.110)  126.632 ms  135.221 ms  126.493 ms

Getting a reply apparently from Sydney with 126ms latency. I normally get about 10ms from other SG machines to google.

Checking the geolocation database services, they're all seeing the IP in SG, apart from EurakAPI which is reporting it in Australia. Is there anything that can be done by the IPs host to correct the IP address geolocation?

Re: [mrvm] - Singapore is live!

The IPs are owned by Australian company RansomIT and were right before assigned to me used in Australia.
I think it was last week that the IPs were geolocated to Singapore and my guess is that not all services are up2date with this change.

I would give it some more time and if it is still the same within a month, ai’ll poke Oliver about it.

Re: [mrvm] - Singapore is live!

You can fix some of  the Australia IP location issues by updating DNS to freenom's SG DNS servers (or any other local DNS servers).

For freenom, change your /etc/resolv.conf to -
nameserver 103.200.218.77
nameserver 103.200.218.78

Back to 1ms ping for google. Other services that use IP address location DBs will might still see the machine in AU though, so have to wait for those be updated.

Edited resolv.conf doesn't persist after reboot though. Anyway to set this?

Getting this with a few addresses in HK, not sure if its a particular range of IPs though. Could updating routing tables on RansomIT/Host Universal's side help with this?

Thanks again

Re: [mrvm] - Singapore is live!

The number 1 reason Singapore was dropped to begin with was because the leaseweb network was so ridiculous, badly routed, unmaintained it was beyond a joke, they consistently failed to get basic peering in place and shit was going via hkg and west coast usa just to get to somewhere else in singapore.

They had zero motivation to improve this.

Just thought I would drop that in there, its a leaseweb problem that they dont want to fix.

Re: [mrvm] - Singapore is live!

Leasweb was one example in HK, i'm getting routing to many hosts in HK routing via Australia, for example -

45.124.64.3 hk-lg.hostus.us   (softlayer)
103.213.245.30 hk.lg.pzea.com
113.29.228.2 traceroute.newmediaexpress.hk
31.13.95.36 (one of facebook's POP/CDN in HK)

Re: [mrvm] - Singapore is live!

I highly doubt its avoidable, at best RansomIT could look at some preferred return leg routing they cant to anything about the initial path taken.

Re: [mrvm] - Singapore is live!

Ah, i see. Even doing the trace route from those Hong Kong looking glasses to the SGvps is routing via Australia.

Could this be an APNIC issue?

Re: [mrvm] - Singapore is live!

Its not an 'issue' unless its an issue for you in isolation smile it is simply that certain parts of the APNIC region simply do not have the mature/advanced international route optimization that the RIPE/ARIN regions do, additionally with BW being magnitudes more expensive in the APNIC region the primary motivation is usually cost over route efficiency.

So in a nutshell, don't expect it to change that is just the way it is there.

I did take exception with leaseweb though as when I did a deep dive it seemed that a lot of the time cost was actually not the factor, they just setup basic peering and left it so you could actually go from leaseweb SG to an end point in SG 5 miles from the DC (physically) via the USA, completely idiotic and for sure more expensive on all fronts.

The NL guys manage the SG network remotely and they just dont give a shit smile

Re: [mrvm] - Singapore is live!

Thank you Backtogeek.

Still a great service from this NAT VPS. Great routing to Europe/US. Haven't noticed anything go by AU for these.

If you change the DNS server to one that's aware the VPS is in SG it helps for the most part. I'm using 103.53.197.218 now, at least it returns SG servers for facebook and google.
