[Mr.VM] High ping time from your Singapore looking glass to Vietnam

Dear folks,

I live in Ho Chi Minh City, VietNam, so the nearest location I would choose is Singapore. But trying with Mr.VM looking glass I receive an unimaginable result: 205ms ping time (longer than to LA, US which is often at 180-200ms)

PING 116.118.67.198 (116.118.67.198) 56(84) bytes of data.

Will your LES box have better network or I have to looking for other locations?

Re: [Mr.VM] High ping time from your Singapore looking glass to Vietnam

From your traceroute I place a wild guess that your route is actually going via the US and back via Hong Kong.
So there is no direct route to Vietnam.

To clarify, it will be the same route from a LES box in Singapore.

Re: [Mr.VM] High ping time from your Singapore looking glass to Vietnam

AFAIK, there're some submarine fiber cables that connect Singapore and VietNam directly (refer: https://www.submarinecablemap.com/#/).
It looks like your network provider doesn't have the completed IP ranges of VN (https://lite.ip2location.com/viet-nam-ip-address-ranges) to make the correct route.

Trying with another IP (which I got from a Vietnamese provider http://ip.vhost.vn/), I see a better result.

PING 103.232.123.53 (103.232.123.53) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 103.232.123.53: icmp_req=1 ttl=55 time=46.2 ms
64 bytes from 103.232.123.53: icmp_req=2 ttl=55 time=46.2 ms
64 bytes from 103.232.123.53: icmp_req=3 ttl=55 time=46.2 ms
64 bytes from 103.232.123.53: icmp_req=4 ttl=55 time=46.3 ms

--- 103.232.123.53 ping statistics ---
4 packets transmitted, 4 received, 0% packet loss, time 3004ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 46.224/46.267/46.361/0.055 ms

Could you work with the network provider to make a better result for routing to VN, or at least my ISP's IP ranges (116.118.0.0 -> 116.118.127.255)?

Re: [Mr.VM] High ping time from your Singapore looking glass to Vietnam

Welcome to Singapore where routing does not matter and going via Hong Kong then Dallas then Los Angeles to get to China is considered fine.

That is just the way routing is in Singapore, its like the wlld west when it comes to peering, it has been like that at least 6 years that i know of it is unlikely to improve any time soon, either it works for you and your ISP did their homework or it does not.

It has improved since first try and when talking to Oliver, it sounded that the DC  were interested to improve as much as they can do from their end.

Not sure if more can be done from the DC side.
I’ve forwarded the info but this might as good as it gets.

I see Singapore is one of biggest points in Asia that has many submarine cables connected to. Six years of keeping that kind of routing is just unbelievable @[email protected]
Will it better in Japan? And do we have plan to expand to Hongkong?

I really appreciate your support, have nothing to say if this is limited at DC side. I am asking my ISP if they can help. Hope we can have better results.
