MrVM Sydney - OpenVZ6 EOL

Hello,

I notice the Sydney VPS runs OpenVZ 6 which is due to EOL later this year with the underlying platform OS due to EOL next year. I'm wondering what the plans for it are  I was thinking about running a Debian environment but even Debian 9 has begun to wind down with the recent release of Debian 10 and I understand Debian 10 needs an underlying kernel version of at least 3.2 though both 9 and 10 ship with far later kernels so I presume there could well be other compatibility issues.

I'm not entirely wed to Debian but I do want to run binaries that get security updates if not bug fixes. I understand that OpenVZ shares memory between instances so do I need to run the same version of the distribution as the host platform to not waste read-only memory? I don't suppose there are shared binaries for some tiny OS like OpenWRT or Alpine? ::-)

Re: MrVM Sydney - OpenVZ6 EOL

If you are concerned, then install Debian 7, side-grade to Devuan 2.0.   It's current with Debian 9, and eventually there will be a Debian 10 compatible build.

The Kernel is shared, but the userspace is yours.  It has much less overhead, but the init system sucks.   Just don't change from a Debian 7 base, and you should be fine for Devuan through the near future.

You can install Alpine yourself- I did.  I didn't use this, but people have had success-

So OpenVZ doesn't share read-only parts of binaries/libraries between containers? I don't see how Duvian addresses my concerns apart from being more OpenVZ friendly - or are you somehow suggesting that people are more likely to be contributing OpenVZ compatible versions of packages and backports of security and bug fixes.

The plans for how to upgrade are being laid out.
Everything is not in place, my only regret is that I didn’t use OpenVZ7, as it was not officially supported by Virtualizor at that time.

Any chance of a free upgrade to KVM if I sign up now? I thought Debian stable was slow in picking up recent releases but the old kernels used by OpenVZ are something else again.

If you pay now and wait for me to release a kvm, then I can upgrade you for free and change ypur payment plan accordingly.

A hint; I have no plans on offering NAT KVM.
