Re: Free (almost) Hosting

I don't think Apache is good for this project, as it uses too many resources. NginX my friend. NginX your soul out! (lol, that sounds wrong)

Re: Free (almost) Hosting

Nginx of course!

Or both smile Can cPanel handle an Nginx/Apache reverse proxy easily (ie. somewhat user friendly)? Even if it's not too friendly, I think you'll get way more out of the box with Nginx.

Re: Free (almost) Hosting

I don't use Apache at all, but people getting shared hosting usually expect their .htaccess to work and all that.

I think Apache is needed, OpenLiteSpeed if not. At least on the backend.

Just my two cents.

Re: Free (almost) Hosting

@Nyr was actually looking more at an NginX front end proxy http://cpnginx.com/index.php that is written for cPanel, so .htaccess should still be fine I would think? (must confess I am not an expert in this specific area)

Re: Free (almost) Hosting

@Backtogeek not my area of expertise either, but cPanel or not I don't think you can use .htaccess files with nginx, since they are loaded and processed directly by Apache.

LiteSpeed has support for them too and it's used by many shared hosting providers, but now that I remember, the open source version doesn't seem to support that sad

At least Apache rewrite rules should be supported one way or another, you are going to get tons of tickets from users getting 404's if not.

Re: Free (almost) Hosting

Did me some googlin' - found this: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1076930

The cPnginx plugin is smart enough to look for .htaccess files and such - serving those from Apache. And I believe Apache handles php requests.

So basically everything works exactly as it should with apache, but it'll serve static files through nginx. Sounds awesome.

Re: Free (almost) Hosting

Oh, I didn't understood the plugin used nginx only as a reverse proxy.

Should be fine then.

Re: Free (almost) Hosting

Instead of wasting money on a license of cPanel, I suggest VestaCP, recently found it and I been testing it, the GUI it's not as ugly or difficult for a new user.
I think its better than Direct Admin or Kloxo, and by default it has Nginx proxing to Apache.

Re: Free (almost) Hosting

I understand why you would say that however despite this being free I also want it to be commercially viable too for others and sucking up the $15 for cPanel will attract a lot more users than a panel I would bet most of us have never heard of and has not been security tested to the point cPanel has.

Re: Free (almost) Hosting

I'm sorry but i've put in abit over 80 hours work this week an haven't had the energy to make the last changes.
I hope I will be able to make it next week but I'm expecting another 80 hour week since I wil do the same type of migration but in another city.

If someone could help out with an answer how to accepting email with exim after using Minstall to install exim and pipe all incomming mail to a script it would save me a couple of hours of testing.

Re: Free (almost) Hosting

I have read that and tried to adapt it to my install but I guess something went wrong.
I'll try to give it another try if I don't fall asleep early tonight.

Re: Free (almost) Hosting

I've made so far that it should execute the pipe script but it fails there.
So I will make a few adjustments to use outlook.com instead (for now) and work from there.

I would be very interested in helping with this project. If I cannot help you implement the system, I would be happy to be a member of support for free or extremely minimal tips.

I would suggest a couple packages...

0,5GB space/5GB bandwidth/5 Emails/1x Each other cPanel Feature $2/year
1GB space/10GB bandwidth/5 Email/2x Each other cPanel Feature $3/year
3GB space/30GB bandwidth/"Unlimited" cPanel features $5/year

Backtogeek, feel free to send me an email as well with your ideas, so I can get a better hold on things and make more specific suggestions!

nicely sized packages, we are considering a FREE package as well, perhaps the 0,5 GB package with only webmail access? No pop3/imap/smtp access.

! Status update !

Since I have been working almost 160 hours the last couple of weeks my time has been limited on getting everything up and running.
But here goes what's been done so far:

* WHMCS installed (and updated), basic/general settings are done.
* CPanel and extra features are installed.
* Free package on cPanel is configured. Looks like it is impossible to exclude pop3/imap access sad
* SSL for WHMCS is installed and working (after I actually read the instructions smile )
* Main packages are created, 3 for now (1 is free) ... more might come.
* Location of cPanel server is Miami.
* Tested setup of accounts
* support departments setup and tested.
* Softaculous installed and configured (318 scripts available)

Things to do:
* Payment gateway
* Site update (add valuable content)
* WHMCS template change (default theme is boring)
* Knowledgebase articles
* get customers
* application packages (automated installations of scripts for the end user)
* automated backups of user accounts

It still feels like I'm missing something (except sleep) but I'll get to that soon.....

Re: Free (almost) Hosting

Couple O things from my side.

I will have a conversation with paypal tomorrow about creating a sub/micro business as a child account against the main merchant account so I can get a unique API for the gateway.

I will also setup an IP/ACL based postfix relay for email so all email is sent via that which give a little more control and reporting.

This last week or so has been nuts for me as well so we probably need a long email catch up/ I might even stick my neck out and install skype or something crazy like that.

Re: Free (almost) Hosting

I'm still beaten by the lack of sleep from the last two weeks.
It's been insane, first 60 hours of work in 5 days, then 80-90 hours in 7 days. Nott o mention that the family wants my attention.

We could always talk on irc if skype is to "advanced" for you smile
